Platsen bär på en blodig historia, i skuggorna ruvar onda krafter och vad du än gör – gå inte in i rum 217. The Shining är skriven av två Pulitzerpris-vinnare; Paul Moravec (musik) och Mark Campbell (libretto). Operan bygger på Stephen Kings ikoniska kultroman från 1977 med samma namn, en av de mest populära och långlivade skräckhistorierna genom tiderna. Skräck är inte den vanligaste genren inom opera, men här bjuds publiken på ett psykologiskt drama med smygande obehag, synvillor och mardrömsvisioner som ger kalla kårar!

A grandiose, brutal love story set in a totalitarian society where truth is tightly regulated. In 1984, any attempt to think and love independently is fraught with danger when even thought is policed. When lies become normalised and history is continually rewritten, who will remember what truth looks like? In 1984, the population of Oceania is under constant surveillance, immersed in a daily torrent of propaganda and doublethink. Led by Big Brother, the INGSOC party has totalitarian control. Their Thought Police crush every attempt at independence. Winston is a civil servant at the Ministry of Truth, continually erasing and reshaping history to fit the party’s version of events, but he secretly longs for truth and love, which he finds in Julia. Their attempt to find sanctuary in each other outside the system has lethal consequences. In a society where love is forbidden, even touch is an act of rebellion. In this opera, based on George Orwell’s 1949 novel, the dystopian world of Oceania is brought to life through music that is by turns brutal and tender, proceeding at a cinematic pace. It is a merciless operatic experience that refuses to let go. 1984 was composed by Lorin Maazel, one of the twentieth century’s leading conductors, and had its premiere at Covent Garden in 2005. She has a magnetic allure and embraces the effect she has on men. We follow her from the day she is sent to a convent as a young girl all the way to her final moments. In between unfolds a story involving desire, love, decadence, double-standards – and the choice between freedom or security. Manon refuses the choice, until life decides for her. Manon is a French opera by Jules Massenet, written in the same late-Romantic style as his later work Thaïs. The elegant, nuanced music features grand choral scenes – capturing Manon’s complexity and humanity. Her joie de vivre, desire, tenderness and doubt have enthralled audiences for generations. This production is directed by Eirik Stubø, who has been acclaimed for his ability to craft convincing characters with psychological depth.
